A Plant Lover’s Perfect Day by the Bay

If you are a plant lover like me, perhaps you seek out the natural world wherever you travel to. I always find myself drawn to the parks, botanical gardens and expansive wilderness of my various travel destinations. I love to experience whatever elements of nature are an organic and intrinsic part of the places I visit. This is certainly connected to the seasonal and herbalism aspects of my spiritual practice!

Growing up in Northern California, I have long been surrounded by natural beauty. We are incredibly blessed to have a wide variety of climates and landscapes that surround us, from the rolling vineyard-covered hills of Wine Country to the crashing waves and jagged cliffs of the Pacific Coast, from the high desert mountain magick of Mount Shasta and Lassen to the north and the snowy shores of Lake Tahoe in the east. Amidst all these spectacular vistas, it can be easy to dismiss the more urban areas of California as a somewhat lesser experience to be had by plant lovers and herbalists.

But to dismiss the Bay Area for its natural wonder would be a mistake. Though some of the world’s most sprawling metropolises dot our landscape, the Bay is also home to some incredible parks, gardens and a deep respect for nature. If you’re a plant lover like me, check out some of my favorite spots below for a perfect day by the Bay!

  • UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens: This unique botanical gardens is tucked away far up on a hillside in Berkeley. The first time I visited, I actually thought I had missed it and gotten lost, as it seems as though you wind your way so deep into the woods! The landscape is very unusual as botanical gardens go and they have an annual plant sale that is a fun thing to check out.

  • sweetgreen: This adorable little restaurant features mostly plant-based bowls and drinks in a fun, retro setting. You can mix and match grains, lettuces, toppings and dressings to create your unique bowl or choose from their delicious seasonal menu. I wholeheartedly recommend this place for a light and refreshing (but very satisfying) lunch.

  • San Francisco Botanical Gardens: I’ve been to a lot of botanical gardens in my area and around the world and this one is my hands-down, all-time favorite. Featuring 9,000 types of plants on 55 acres, this garden is a world away from the bustling city outside and is a seriously transporting and transformative experience. The Garden of Fragrance, in particular, is a wonderful spot for witches interested in magickal and culinary herbs.
  • Conservatory of Flowers: This is one of my favorite spots in San Francisco. The magical vibe at the Conservatory of Flowers always reminds me of the Victorian conservatory illustrations in my favorite children’s book, Miss Rumphius, (which actually inspired the name of Lupine Hollow!) Step inside to be transported to a tropical jungle, complete with babbling ponds and overhanging vines.

  • Labyrinth at Land’s End: When spending a day by the Bay, you have to check out the Bay itself, of course, and the Pacific Ocean just beyond it! The Labyrinth is one of my favorite hidden gems in San Francisco – though you may see lots of photos of this unique spot, it’s a pretty good hike to get to it so it still feels like a bit of a secret. The labyrinth is perched on a cliff above the ocean with a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the hike to get there takes you through forests and coastal flora alike.
