Refreshing Winter Tea Blend Recipe

Although I drink tea all year long, day in and day out, winter is the ideal time to enjoy my favorite beverage. There’s nothing quite like cozying up on the couch or in bed with a cup of hot tea on a cold or stormy night.

Throughout the holidays, I enjoy spiced teas, made with my favorite winter spices and even dark chocolate nibs, but as January rolls around, I’m always on the hunt for something more refreshing. Though hot tea probably isn’t what comes to mind when you think of “refreshing”, certain herbs and citrus are abundant at this time of year and make for an excellent, fresh winter taste. In this particular recipe, we’ll be combining mint, lemon verbena and grapefruit.

When I was traveling in the Netherlands and Belgium last spring, I was delighted by the simple way they prepared mint tea, seemingly everywhere I went. Even at chain coffee shops, when I ordered a cup of mint tea, I received a clear glass mug filled with hot water and a generous clump of fresh-cut mint leaves. The tea was gentle and subtle and as fresh as it could possibly be, while still evoking a warm and cozy feeling.

That’s why I’m including two versions of this recipe: a dry tea blend as usual, and a fresh cut version to try too! What teas are you enjoying this winter?

Refreshing Winter Tea Blend Recipe (Dry)

  • 1 tbsp dried mint leaves
  • 2 tsp dried lemon verbena
  • 1 tsp dried grapefruit peel

  1. Combine all ingredients into a tea infuser or bag.

  2. Pour hot water over the infuser and steep 3-5 minutes.

Refreshing Winter Tea Blend Recipe (Fresh)

  • 10-15 stems fresh mint
  • 5-8 stems fresh lemon verbena
  • 1 slice fresh grapefruit

  1. Combine mint and lemon verbena in a glass mug or cup.

  2. Pour hot water over herbs and steep 5-10 minutes.

  3. Add slice of grapefruit and enjoy warm.
