How to Use Astrology to Figure Out What Kind of Witch You Are

For many new witches, identifying the “type” of witchcraft you practice is a big issue. Though witchcraft defies labels in many ways, it can be helpful to understand existing traditions and be able to name the activities and beliefs you engage in. I wrote about this in my most popular post of all time, 5 Steps to Figure Out What Kind of Witch You Are. In that post, one of the important steps I outline is to read your own astrological natal chart to find insights into the magick and types of witchcraft you may be drawn to explore.

Astrology can be a daunting field to dive into and there are so many books out there on the subject that it’s hard to know where to begin or how to understand in what ways astrology applies to you. (One of my favorite books on the subject is Llewellyn’s Complete Book of Astrology which is quite comprehensive, or Intuitive Astrology.) That’s why I’m going to break it down to help you use your personal astrology to figure out what kind of witch you are! This exercise isn’t just for newbie witches either; if you are more advanced, you may find new and intriguing insights into your magickal and spiritual practice in your natal chart.

For the purposes of this post, we are going to focus on the sun, moon and rising signs, (also known as the ascendant). There are over 1,700 possible combinations just of these three signs, let alone the rest of your natal chart, and reading these three together, holistically, provides a deeper understanding.

Astrology is about finding commonalities and then exploring the diverse and seemingly endless combinations of those common threads.

What Are Your Sun, Moon and Rising Signs?

To start us off, let’s answer this simple question. When asked what our “sign” is, most of us respond with our sun sign. This is the easiest sign to calculate and the one most people readily know.

Your sun sign is literally the astrological sign through which the sun was passing when you were born. The year is divided into 12 approximately equal sections, one for the sun in each sign. This is because it takes one year for the sun to pass through all 12 astrological signs, so you can see why it is simple to calculate. The sun sign represents your basic personality and ego.

Your moon sign is the sign through which the moon was passing when you were born. It takes the moon approximately 29 days to pass through all 12 astrological signs, or one full lunar cycle from new moon to full moon and back to new moon again. The moon sign represents your emotional self, how you handle, process and express emotions, as well as any psychic abilities you may have. This sign is fairly simple to calculate, but if the moon moved from one sign to the next on the day you were born, (which it does about every two and a half days), you will need to know the exact time of your birth in order to accurately calculate your moon sign.

Your rising or ascendant sign is the sign that was on the Eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. The rising sign represents your outward self, the personality that you reflect to others. Oftentimes, other people may guess that your rising sign is your sun sign, because it represents the version of you they are most familiar with. It is very important to know the exact time of your birth in order to accurately calculate your rising sign.

If you do not know the exact time of your birth, I would recommend just reading for your sun and moon signs; these two signs alone will still give you deep insight.

Each astrological sign has its own personality, its own merits and its own flaws. Each sign can manifest in positive and negative ways and is associated with a particular gender, element and planet. Click here to create your own birth chart now!

Witchcraft Inspired by Your Personal Astrology

On to the juicy insights! Below, I have mapped out different elements of witchcraft and the occult that each sign may be interested in. To delve deeply into your own personal astrology, read for your sun, moon and rising signs and combine the elements into your own unique branch of witchcraft. If your sun, moon and/or ascendant are in the same sign, that simply means the insights for that sign are going to be all the more powerful!

Witchcraft by the Signs

Aries:

Masculine, Fire Sign, Ruled by Mars

You are passionate, assertive and value your sense of self. You have a fiery energy and are always standing up for yourself and others. This energy is productive when poured into the path of the Warrior Witch, fighting for what you believe in and protecting what you care about.

Taurus:

Feminine, Earth Sign, Ruled by Venus

You are determined, patient and crave comfort and pleasure. Taurus is very grounded and, as such, the path of the Cottage Witch is ideal for this sign. You like to be in your home or sanctuary, and incorporating that into your spirituality will help you connect more deeply.

Gemini:

Masculine, Air Sign, Ruled by Mercury

You are flirtatious, restless and very active. As the sign of the Twins, you can sometimes be indecisive or feel divided about your spirituality. The path of the Hedge Witch is perfect for you, focused on herbalism and nature but also esoteric concepts that use the power of your mind, like astral projection.

Cancer:

Feminine, Water Sign, Ruled by the Moon

You are sensitive, caring and intuitive. The Moon is at home in this sign, so you feel emotions deeply and are highly in tune with the lunar cycle. For this reason, you should consider incorporating the moon phases into your practice in a big way as a Lunar Witch. Hold rituals on the new moon, waxing quarter moon, full moon and waning quarter moon, (essentially once a week), and trust your intuition.

Leo:

Masculine, Fire Sign, Ruled by the Sun

You are dramatic, outgoing and creative. As the only sign in the zodiac that is ruled by the sun, following the cycles of the sun can be a powerful way to tap into your witchiness as a Solar Witch. This includes the seasonal sabbats like the solstices and equinoxes, which follow the movement of the sun, and the astrological seasons, as the sun moves through all 12 signs every year.

Virgo:

Feminine, Earth Sign, Ruled by Mercury

You are practical and a perfectionist, but also deeply in touch with the earth. Virgo is associated with all things green, so the path of the Garden Witch and magickal herbalism is perfect for you. Keeping a neat and tidy garden is important to you, as well as having a purpose for the herbs and plants you grow.

Libra:

Masculine, Air Sign, Ruled by Venus

You are romantic, sociable and crave beauty in your life. Librans are often highly creative and have a powerful sense of aesthetics, which is why the path of the Art Witch is perfect for you. This will give you a chance to express yourself through magick and create beauty in your spiritual life.

Scorpio:

Feminine, Water Sign, Ruled by Pluto

You are secretive, possessive and have an air of mystery. Scorpio is one of the most misunderstood astrological signs, but you are capable of great transformation and intuitive wisdom. Scorpio is not afraid of taboos or “dark” subjects, so the path of the Shadow Witch and the process of acknowledging and transmuting your shadows will be a powerful experience for you.

Sagittarius:

Masculine, Fire Sign, Ruled by Jupiter

You are adventurous, optimistic and spiritual. Sagittarius is always seeking knowledge and understanding, and can have a bit of a restless spirit. The path of the Wild Witch may appeal to you, which incorporates elements of green witchcraft with a focus on herbalism, but has a broader, wilder scope than just the garden. You may be interested in foraging for medicinal herbs and meditating in the forest.

Capricorn:

Feminine, Earth Sign, Ruled by Saturn

You are ambitious, reliable and reserved. Capricorn is studious and conservative and values traditions. The path of the Kitchen Witch, industriously whipping up delicious treats with more than a touch of magick in them, is perfect for you.

Aquarius:

Masculine, Air Sign, Ruled by Uranus

You are rebellious, independent and can sometimes seem detached. Aquarius is the sign of humanitarian efforts, as well as social revolutions, so you may be deeply political. Aquarius also rules the practice of astrology itself so the path of the Astro Witch is perfect for you! You feel called to explore the last frontier of the stars – and the mind.

Pisces:

Feminine, Water Sign, Ruled by Neptune

You are dreamy, imaginative and, at times, somewhat unrealistic. Pisces is one of the most deeply intuitive signs, and often demonstrates psychic abilities. Pisces also picks up on the emotions and energies of others, which is why exploring the path of the Empath Witch is perfect for you so that you can claim your true power.

There are many more forms of witchcraft than are listed here, but I hope this list helps you find your path! If you’re ready to get even more intimate with your astrological chart and discover all the layers of insight it contains about your path as a witch, your needs and desires in this life, and much more, join me in The Starlight Coven!

This monthly program will empower you to feel more confident and in love with yourself by bringing your awareness to the cycles of the seasons and the stars and how they impact you personally. Many of the systems we use in witchcraft are focused on the movement of the sun and moon, (astrology, the seasons and seasonal sabbat celebrations, and the moon phases). I’ve streamlined these systems into an integrative method of self-love and empowerment, which I share in the Coven.
