The Complete Guide to Grimoires: Part 3

Many, many months ago I started a series called The Complete Guide to Grimoires, featuring all three of my grimoire volumes. The first part focused on my Practical Grimoire, the book where I record information about herbs, crystals, moon phases and more. The second part focused on my Chronicle Grimoire, the daily journal where I record the current moon phase, my dreams and tarot or oracle readings.

The third part was supposed to focus on my Essence Grimoire, the book where I (theoretically) record my practice and who I am as a witch. Except, I got really stuck on this grimoire. I couldn’t get my head around it and, honestly, that’s because eight months ago, I didn’t know who I was as a witch. I knew who I had been. I knew my life had been upended. But I didn’t really know what witchcraft looked like yet in my new life.

Well, today is my birthday (and I’m in Disneyland! Yes, I am an adult, thank you.) So I’m finally tackling this question of who am I as a witch? What am I? What do I want to be?

Astrology

As astrology, especially lunar astrology, is a big part of my practice, I am including a page with my natal chart drawn on it, as well as pages about each of my signs:

  • Sun in Taurus
  • Moon in Aries
  • Ascendant/Rising in Virgo
  • Mercury in Aries
  • Venus Retrograde in Aries
  • Mars in Cancer
  • Jupiter Retrograde in Libra
  • Saturn in Aquarius
  • Uranus in Capricorn
  • Neptune in Capricorn
  • Pluto Retrograde in Scorpio

I am also going to include a page on my natal moon phase (which is waning crescent) and my natal moon mansion (which is the Second Mansion). These are the elements that are included in my Moon Sign Reading if you would like more information about your own natal moon phase and mansion!

Heritage

I am including sections on the history of witchcraft in the two countries different branches of my family primarily immigrated from: Scotland and Italy. Both have strong traditions of witchcraft and I’m very interested in incorporating more of those traditions into my own modern practice.

Stay tuned, as I might be sharing some of what I learn here on the blog!

Elements of My Practice

Finally, I’m including sections on all of the elements that are currently important in my practice. These will include:

  • Tea Ritual
  • Crystals
  • Kitchen Magick
  • The Moon
  • The Seasons and Sabbats

The first page of this section will feature the date that I recorded the information so that in the future, I can go back and start a new section of how my practice has evolved since then.

How do you record your practice and who you are as a witch? Is this part of your grimoire or something you’ve thought about?

The final part in this series is the Lunar Grimoire!

  1. Happy (belated) Birthday! Thank you so much for finally getting to this 3rd book… it’s given me a starting point for figuring out who I am as a witch and how I am evolving ~ tfs! Can’t wait for the Lunar Grimoire… you are so inspiring!

    1. Aw you are so sweet – thanks for the birthday wishes! Figuring out your path can be the most difficult and rewarding task that faces a witch. If you ever need to throw ideas around, I’m always here to help!

There’s also a section on developing your grimoire in my new course, Practical Magick for Modern Witches.
