There are four basic moon phases: new, waxing, full and waning. Most of us witches are pretty familiar with the energies of these phases.
At the new moon, we set intentions and goals and open ourselves up to new things.
At the waxing moon, we take action towards our goals.
At the full moon, we celebrate how far we’ve come and acknowledge where we need to do more or better.
At the waning moon, we release our personal judgments and banish negative energies.
Most of these phases are pretty easy to relate to. However, I find that the waxing moon is the most difficult to connect with and to honor so I spent some time recently thinking about why that might be. It’s one thing to set intentions and make plans, it’s another thing entirely to actually make those dreams come true.
I considered why some moon phases are easy to connect with, (as a Virgo Rising, setting goals and making concrete plans at the new moon is my jam). I considered why some moon phases are a relief, (letting go of negativity at the waning moon often comes with a sigh of relief).
I came to the conclusion that the waxing moon is so difficult for me because, at my core, I am an incredibly lazy person. With all the Earth energy in my chart, it takes a lot to get me off my ass. If I could literally sit on my patio with a cold glass of rosé and eat chips and chocolate all day… I would. Or at least wander around a museum for hours and then drink martinis at a plush bar somewhere.
Luckily, Virgo is both an Earth sign and a DOER, and with my Moon in Aries, I’m not all sedentary, all the time. I need passion projects or I get bored and restless.
Nonetheless, taking action is not really my thing. Something I’m not excited about, no matter how necessary, might sit on my to do list for weeks before it finally gets crossed off. So having the waxing moon breathing down my neck every couple of weeks, and feeling like I need to honor that energy, can be discouraging.
Since I feel like a lot of people probably share my waxing moon struggle, I thought I’d post a little ritual for getting us up and taking action.
Waxing Moon Ritual
Tools and Supplies Needed:
- Yoga mat
- 3 black or white taper candles
- Pen and paper
This ritual is best performed outside in view of the waxing moon but as that’s not possible in many situations, performing it at your altar will work just as well.
- Light one taper candle, leaving the other two unlit.
- Stand in mountain pose on your yoga mat outside facing the waxing moon or at your altar. Raise your arms above your head and stare at the moon or close your eyes. Breathe deeply.
- Move through a sequence of yoga poses focused on upward motion, such as tree pose, goddess pose and Warrior I. As you move, clear your mind of stress and negativity, focusing only on your breath.
- Light a second taper candle, symbolizing the moon as it waxes towards full illumination.
- Sit cross-legged on your mat and lay a piece of paper or a journal in front of you. Write down the intention you set at the new moon at the top of the page.
- Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Focus on the intention you set. Have you taken any action towards it yet?
- Open your eyes and write down everything you can think of that needs to happen or needs to be done in order for your intention to manifest, including things you have already done.
- When you are finished, cross off everything you have done so far. Now, number the remaining tasks in the order they should be completed.
- Light the third and final taper candle. If you are able to burn items, write down just the things you have already accomplished on a separate piece of paper and burn it.
- Take a moment to add the necessary tasks to your calendar, to do list app or other function to help you remember what you need to do to manifest your dreams.
- When you are ready, blow out the candles to end the ritual.
